Research Area & Interests :
Environmental
and Evolutionary genomics.
My
laboratory is involved in understanding the microbial community
structure of some unique environmental sites using the 16S rRNA based
culture independent approach. We have studied the mid gut flora of
mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus
and described a new species Aeromonas culicicola from it. Presently we are studying the role
played by this species in the gut environment. We have undertaken major
efforts to analyze Expressed Sequence Tags in the mid gut of malaria
vector Anopheles stephensii.
In addition we are also
analyzing marine ecosystems and gut environments of other insects to
understand their diversity. We are using various molecular chronometers
(16S rRNA, 23S rRNA, gyrB, rpoD) to study evolutionary relationships between diverse
groups of organisms, like bacteria, fish, reptiles and insects.
