The Department of Biotechnology’s BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment & Employment) Policy, for Fostering High-Performance Biomanufacturing, approved by the Union Cabinet in 2024, marks a bold step forward in India’s journey toward a sustainable and innovation-driven future. This ambitious Policy establishes a national framework designed to speed up the development and scaling of innovative high-performance biomanufacturing technologies while leveraging the nation’s own strain reservoir for the development of bio-based products.
To promote indigenous high-performance biomanufacturing of bio-based products, the Department has created a “BioE3 Strain Resource Centre for fostering High-Performance Biomanufacturing” at BRIC-NCCS Pune. This Biorepository provides access to high-performance, indigenous microbial strains with freedom-to-operate status, facilitating efficient high-performance biomanufacturing processes. The use of domestically developed strains ensures unrestricted commercial control and positions industries to scale sustainably while retaining full economic benefits. This enables innovators to scale up production rapidly while safeguarding intellectual property rights and ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards.
We invite academic institutions, research labs, and biotech companies to contribute strains to the repository. By depositing your strains with BRIC-NCCS, you secure a controlled platform to share innovations while protecting your IP and ensuring biosafety. All exchanges and usage of strains are governed by clearly defined agreements that protect the intellectual property of contributors while upholding national biosafety and biodiversity regulations. This initiative not only accelerates high-performance biomanufacturing but also credits strain developers.
Our target users are startups, industry R&D teams, and academic labs seeking efficient indigenous production strains with a freedom to operate. We strive to make accessing these strains seamless, allowing you to focus on innovation and scaling up without IP constraints. All users must agree to the licensing conditions associated with individual strains.
Join us in building a strong strain ecosystem that benefits all stakeholders in India!
